Encounters Documentary Film Fest


South African and international documentaries are given the spotlight during this annual documentary film festival. Held at various cinemas across the city, you can treat yourself to the award-winners or the cult favourites that will leave you nothing short of inspired. Numerous events are held alongside the theatre’s programme, including workshops and guest speakers. Don’t miss special screenings that include a Q&A with the director.

Baxter Theatre


The Baxter Theatre Centre is a vibrant, multicultural entertainment hub in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Nestled under the striking Devil’s Peak Mountain, it boasts a world-class theatre that hosts a riveting line up of plays, musicals, classical concerts, dance performances and more. Pair dinner and a show, and visit the theatre’s Maharajah restaurant, featuring a buffet of Indian cuisine. During intermission, scoop up a seat at the Long Bar for cocktails.

Church Street Galleries

Find Church Street in the heart of Cape Town, where the tree-lined walkway is home to a number of the city’s top contemporary art galleries that are free to enter. In easy walking distance you can visit the latest exhibitions at Smith Studio, World Art, the Cape Gallery and the AVA Gallery. If you’re still hunting for master works, head to nearby Shortmarket or Hout Street for their gallery offerings. This art meander is best done on a Saturday morning as most galleries close by 1pm.

Art at Groot Constantia

Art at Groot Constantia is a free gallery that puts the spotlight on some of the most outstanding art produced by South African artists. With a permanent exhibition, as well as rotating special showings, the gallery is always at the forefront of ground-breaking artistry. Housed within the Groot Constantia estate tasting room, it’s ideal for satisfying your artistic side with a wine tasting experience.

Iziko South African National Gallery

The South African National Gallery is home to an exceptional collection of South African, African, British, French, Dutch and Flemish art. The museum boasts iconic and striking pieces dating from the colonial to the modern era, and includes paintings, photography, sculpture, beadwork and textiles. Housed in the park at Company’s Garden, a visit to the museum is best paired with a picnic or stroll along the lush green grounds.

Art Class with Bright Art


After visiting some of the best art galleries in Cape Town, you’re sure to be inspired. Visit Bright Art Creative Space in Woodstock to put your own paintbrush to work. A range of classes are hosted nightly in their studios, including figure drawing, watercolours and landscape painting. The studio also hosts bi-annual exhibitions of student work, where you might just scoop up a collectable piece for a steal.
