Weekend for the photo album

What’s better than a breakaway with your bestie? One with so many photo-opportunities that you’ll have a weekend holiday album that makes your friends at home a little bit envious. Fill your Instagram feed or your favourite photo album with shots of you and your partner in crime whale watching and walking through the fynbos in bloom. A selfie of you both from the top of a double-decker bus while the city’s coastline soars past will be frame-worthy, and a visit to a world of birds will give you a tapestry of images that reflect the essence of Cape Town – a city of natural beauty.

Whale watching, Hermanus Whale Cruisers

A 1.5-hour drive from Cape Town lands you in the heart of whale watching in the Cape. July is peak season for sighting these magnificent creatures with the start of calving season bringing them close to shore. Keep your eyes peeled for their tell-tale flukes as you drive along False Bay Coast. If weather permits, head straight for a boat-based whale watching tour with Hermanus Whale Cruises. Their boats depart four times a day from the New Harbour on a 2-hour journey. With drinks and snacks provided, it’s an awesome experience.

Fynbos Walk at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

There’s no better time to see Cape fynbos in full glory than the winter months. Many species are in flower and the Fynbos Walk at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is a paradise of colour and birds. Adding to the adventure is the 130m-long canopy walkway, or ‘Boomslang’, which snakes through the treetops – a must-see. After all the fresh air, you’ll want to tuck into a hearty breakfast or lunch at the Kirstenbosch Tea Room, Moyo Kirstenbosch restaurant or simply pack your own picnic basket to enjoy on the rolling lawns of the gardens.

Two Oceans Aquarium

V&A Waterfront

Step into this underwater wonder world where the kid in you will be wowed by the sheer wonder of the sea. Situated at the V&A Waterfront, the aquarium showcases the unique marine life of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans which lie on either side of the Cape of Good Hope. The fascinating exhibits and galleries showcase over 3,000 marine creatures – including sharks, turtles and penguins. Grab the camera and snap a selfie of you, your bestie and your favourite sea creature!

City Sightseeing Bus tour

Long Street, CBD

City Sightseeing’s hop-on hop-off bus tour is undoubtedly one of the most fun ways to go sightseeing in the Mother City. Choose from routes which take you through the inner city, out to the peninsula or to the Constantia wine region. Grab a seat on the open deck on top and watch the beautiful scenery fly past as the audio guide tells all you need to know. Want to explore more? Hop off at any of the marked stops, and hop back on when you’re ready to continue.

World of Birds

Hout Bay

World of Birds is a beautiful and tropical garden sanctuary, and Africa’s largest bird park. It boasts over 3,000 birds, along with scenic gardens and walking routes. For the nature lover, World of Birds is a special place tucked away in Hout Bay. Combine this with a visit to a harbour- or beachside restaurant and you’ll find some great photo ops worth framing when you get home.

Col’cacchio pizzeria

Camps Bay

Pizza in all its cheesy glory is a firm family favourite and at Col’cacchio Pizzeria they have perfected the art of the thin base, wood-fired variety. Set right on the popular Victoria Road strip, the laid-back Camps Bay restaurant is the perfect family lunch or dinner spot after a day on the beach. The special Bambini menu is tailor-made for under 12s and you can also expect plenty of vegetarian, wheat and gluten free as well as banting options on the extensive menu of tasty Italian fare.
