River Club


The River Club situated on the banks of the Liesbeek River in Observatory is home to a nine-hole course and a top-class double-story driving range. If your New Year’s resolutions include upping your game, call on the services of the training academy, Southern African Golf Institute, based right here for some pointers. After smashing some balls, make sure you hit the Slug & Lettuce restaurant where you can tuck into generous portions of real pub grub while enjoying some sport on the big screen or relish the summer sun outside under the trees. Daily specials and a lively calendar of entertainment make this a real crowd-pleaser.

Wine & Cheese Tasting

Fairview Wine Estate, Paarl

While wine tasting has taken a turn for the more daring with parings that include chocolate, biltong and even sweets, you simply can’t go wrong with the classic duo of cheese and wine. Fairview has perfected this experience by not only producing a wide range of melt-in-your-mouth cheeses, but also a selection of world-class wines. The beautiful farm, known for its iconic goat tower that welcomes guests, is just a 40-minute drive from Cape Town in the picturesque Paarl winelands. The tasting room comprises a number of tasting pods offering a tasting selection of six different wines, then you can move across to the deli to sample a selection of Fairview’s Jersey milk and goat’s milk cheeses. The Standard Tasting is just R30 per person and includes six wines and a selection of cheeses.

Once you’ve tasted your way through the delectable wine and cheese at Fairview, head over to the Val de Vie Estate. Inspired by the acclaimed vintages of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate produces fine wines derived from traditional Rhone varietals with no less than 11 different Rhône varietals grown here. Introduce your taste buds to this fusion of French and South African winemaking tradition at the Polo Pavilion or book a table at the Polo Club Restaurant, where you could enjoy a table-side tasting along with a delicious lunch prepared by head chef, Edmore Ruzoza.

If you are looking for the perfect spot to unwind after a round at the nearby Steenberg Golf Estate stop in at Peddlar’s and Co. Previously known as Peddlars on the Bend, the name and the menu might be new, but you can expect the same great location, hospitality and cuisine at this popular-as-ever spot. Sample contemporary Italian cuisine in the relaxed setting of Volaré Ristorante or lunch al fresco on The Oak Terrace.
