Passport to Nature

Mother Nature is always in the spotlight in the Mother City, but she’s at her most glorious during springtime when the natural world wakes from its winter sleep. The best way to experience the beauty and abundance is over a weekend, when you have time to immerse yourself in flower shows, open gardens and other events that showcase the city’s ecological diversity. If flowers aren’t your thing, then go marine with a visit to the Aquarium or snorkel with seals in Simonstown. It’s a weekend of wonder, designed by nature.

Cape Town Flower Show

Castle of Good Hope, CBD

This is a gardening enthusiast’s paradise! Hundreds of florals, dozens of garden exhibitions and a range of outdoor design are in the spotlight at the Cape Town Flower Show. Stroll the expo floor to find your favourite blooms or take part in the programme of workshops, gardener’s question and answer sessions and cooking with herbs demonstrations. There are day and night activities and a beautifully curated entertainment area where you can sip wine amid stunning flower arrangements.

Whale Watching

False Bay Coast

South Africa is one of the best places in the world to spot these magnificent mammals frolicking in the sea. Spot the Southern Right Whales as they flock to the Cape’s waters from July through November for the calving season. This is the ideal time for a family road trip along the False Bay Coast or to the whale capital of the world, Hermanus. Pack some ‘padkos’ and stop at the many viewing points along the way to catch a glimpse of these gentle giants of the ocean blowing, breaching and lob-tailing.

Seal Snorkelling

Simon’s Town

A 30-minute drive out of Cape Town takes you to the naval town of Simon’s Town, where Pisces Divers invites you to snorkel with the Cape fur seal. Whether you are an expert or beginner, you will have a blast hanging out with these curious and playful animals. Snorkel alongside them as they navigate the water’s surface or dive under when they go exploring. The tour includes a visit to the Roman Rock Lighthouse, and is suitable for all ages.

Two Ocean’s Aquarium

V&A Waterfront

Step in to this underwater wonder world where kids and grown-ups alike will be wowed by the unusual, the spectacular and the scary creatures of the sea. Meet a rock-hopper penguin, pick up and feel marine animals and plants at the Touch Pool, or watch the frenzy of feeding time in the shark tank. Kids will love the daily puppet shows and getting busy with fishy-themed arts and crafts activities. Guaranteed to be one of the top family weekend activities.

Picnic at Green Point Park

Green Point

Pack a picnic and take the family to the city’s most exciting green space. The Green Point Urban Park offers walking trails, indigenous plant life and an outdoor labyrinth. Choose a space on the wide green lawn and let the kids play in the Tot-Lot and Adventure Play Parks. Tours are available for kids and adults that highlight the park’s connection to science and nature. Also visit the Biodiversity Showcase Garden, showcasing 25,000 indigenous plants.

Waterski at Blue Rock

Sir Lowry’s Pass

It's not exactly waterskiing at Blue Rock, but cable-skiing. Using an overhead cable system and electronic motor, skiers are pulled around the lake in a safe and environmentally-friendly (no petrol!) system. Held at the Blue Rock Lake, which is the only clear water lake in the Western Cape, it's a fun and exhilarating day out for the whole family. Up to 10 riders can ski at the same time, and you're free to choose from standard skiing, wakeboarding or knee-boarding.
